Last updated: May 13, 2026 · Effective date: May 13, 2026
These Terms of Service govern your access to and use of TypeSearch, including the website, search tools, browsing tools, account features, saved collections, paid features, and related services (collectively, the "Service"). By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, you may not access or use the Service.
TypeSearch is operated by the TypeSearch team. For legal, privacy, copyright, source, removal, billing, or general inquiries, contact [email protected].
You must be at least eighteen (18) years old, or the age of majority in your jurisdiction if higher, to use the Service. By using TypeSearch, you represent that you meet this requirement and that your use complies with all applicable laws and regulations.
TypeSearch is a discovery, indexing, research, reference, bookmarking, and organization platform for historical type specimens, foundry catalogs, printed typographic artifacts, archival design materials, and related source references. TypeSearch is not an archive, source institution, rights-clearance service, legal-advice service, official institutional catalog, font marketplace, or image library.
Access to or display of any material through the Service does not imply that such material is in the public domain, free from copyright restrictions, cleared for use, or available for any use beyond personal research and reference. You are solely responsible for determining whether any use of referenced materials is legally permitted and for obtaining any necessary licenses, releases, permissions, or approvals.
TypeSearch materials
The TypeSearch platform, including its software, interface, branding, design system, original written content, metadata selection and arrangement, curation structure, search and browse experience, saved-collection tools, and related original elements, is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, reproduce, distribute, modify, create derivative works from, or commercially exploit TypeSearch's original elements except as permitted by these Terms or with written permission from TypeSearch.
Third-party materials
Materials referenced, linked, indexed, displayed, or described through the Service — including type specimens, images, scans, catalogs, archival documents, source metadata, names, marks, designs, and other third-party materials — remain the property of their respective creators, estates, publishers, institutions, licensors, or rights holders. TypeSearch disclaims ownership of third-party materials.
Restrictions
You agree not to:
Reasonable personal, educational, editorial, and non-commercial research use is permitted where otherwise lawful and consistent with these Terms.
Certain features may require account registration through TypeSearch or a third-party authentication provider. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity under your account. You agree to notify TypeSearch promptly at [email protected] if you become aware of unauthorized access or use.
TypeSearch may suspend, restrict, or terminate accounts or access where it reasonably believes there has been a violation of these Terms, abuse, fraud, security risk, unlawful activity, excessive automated usage, or conduct that may harm TypeSearch, users, source institutions, rights holders, or third parties.
TypeSearch may offer free features, account features, paid features, or subscriptions. Paid features, if offered, are software, account, discovery, organization, bookmarking, saved-search, personalization, or workflow features only. A paid feature or subscription does not grant any ownership, license, permission, clearance, image right, font right, reproduction right, publication right, commercial-use right, AI-training right, or other right in third-party materials.
If TypeSearch offers automatically renewing paid subscriptions, the price, billing frequency, renewal terms, cancellation method, and any material limitations will be presented before purchase. By purchasing an automatically renewing subscription, you authorize recurring charges until you cancel. You may cancel through the available account or billing controls, or by contacting [email protected] if no self-service cancellation tool is available.
Unless otherwise stated at checkout or required by applicable law, subscription fees are non-refundable and cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. TypeSearch may change subscription pricing or paid-feature availability by providing reasonable notice where required. Payment information may be processed by third-party payment processors. TypeSearch does not store raw payment-card information on its own servers.
You agree not to use the Service to:
The Service links to and references third-party archives, libraries, repositories, institutions, publishers, collections, and external websites. TypeSearch does not control and is not responsible for third-party content, rights information, licensing terms, availability, accuracy, security practices, privacy policies, access rules, or technical systems.
Your interactions with third-party sites are governed by those sites' own terms and policies. TypeSearch does not warrant that linking to or referencing materials through the Service is consistent with the terms of any particular source institution or rights holder. You are responsible for reviewing applicable third-party terms before using or relying on source materials.
If you submit feedback, suggestions, corrections, source information, metadata, notes, or other materials to TypeSearch, you grant TypeSearch a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable license to use, reproduce, modify, display, distribute, and incorporate those submissions in connection with operating, improving, securing, and promoting the Service. You represent that you have the rights necessary to submit any materials you provide. TypeSearch may review, edit, reject, or remove submissions at its discretion.
TypeSearch does not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, complete, accurate, or continuously available. TypeSearch may modify, suspend, discontinue, restrict, or remove any part of the Service at any time without liability. Linked archival resources and third-party source sites may change, move, restrict access, or become unavailable without notice.
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE." TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, TYPESEARCH AND THE TYPESEARCH TEAM DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, AVAILABILITY, SECURITY, AND COMPLETENESS.
TYPESEARCH MAKES NO WARRANTY THAT THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, THAT SEARCH RESULTS OR METADATA WILL BE ACCURATE OR COMPLETE, THAT THIRD-PARTY MATERIALS ARE LEGALLY USABLE, OR THAT ANY ERRORS WILL BE CORRECTED. TYPESEARCH DOES NOT PROVIDE LEGAL ADVICE, RIGHTS CLEARANCE, LICENSING ADVICE, OR PERMISSION TO USE THIRD-PARTY MATERIALS.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, TYPESEARCH AND THE TYPESEARCH TEAM SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE SERVICE, INCLUDING LOSS OF DATA, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF PROFITS, LOSS OF REVENUE, RELIANCE ON METADATA OR SEARCH RESULTS, UNAVAILABILITY OF THIRD-PARTY SOURCES, COPYRIGHT DISPUTES, OR CLAIMS ARISING FROM THIRD-PARTY MATERIALS.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, TYPESEARCH'S TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO TYPESEARCH DURING THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR (B) FIFTY UNITED STATES DOLLARS (USD $50.00). SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW CERTAIN LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY; IN THOSE JURISDICTIONS, LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless TypeSearch and the TypeSearch team from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, judgments, awards, losses, costs, expenses, and fees, including reasonable attorneys' fees, arising out of or related to:
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Illinois, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except that nothing in these Terms limits mandatory consumer protection rights you may have under the laws of your own jurisdiction.
Before bringing a formal claim, you agree to first contact TypeSearch at [email protected] and attempt to resolve the dispute informally. Either party may seek injunctive or equitable relief in a court of competent jurisdiction where necessary to protect intellectual property, confidential information, security, or access rights.
TypeSearch may update these Terms from time to time. Updated Terms will be posted with a revised effective date. Where changes are material and TypeSearch has a practical way to contact affected registered users or subscribers, TypeSearch will provide reasonable notice. Continued use of the Service after updated Terms take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
